Asleep that night after your bowl of gruel and hard biscuit supper, you’d be jarred awake at 11:40 PM as an iceberg tore a 300 foot gash below the ship’s waterline.
If you were one of the 700 who survived, you would have seen Titanic slip into the icy waters at 2:20 AM.
You would have heard the cries as 1500 people perished.
More than 100 years later, the tragedy still grips us.
Survivors and victim’s families filed claims exceeding $16 million dollars.
White Star Line contested their claims. They said a clause in the passenger tickets and old maritime laws released them from liability. They said the accident was not foreseeable.
In time, the plaintiffs settled out of court for $664,000 to be divided among them.
At best, this was a 3rd Class settlement. But it shows how difficult it can be to win against a large corporation that is denying responsibility.
